Becoming a team leader at the Akulivik airport wasn’t a path Jamisie Aliqu initially envisioned. But as the saying goes, when opportunity knocks, you open the door.
Jamisie joined the Air Inuit team in 2022, working part-time in ground operations, primarily handling cargo and baggage. From day one, he felt at home. “I like my job here — everything about it. I’m very busy, and for me, that’s a good thing,” he shares.
At the end of 2024, a team leader position became available at the Akulivik station. Seeing that none of his colleagues were applying, Jamisie seized the opportunity — and got the job. With this new role came new responsibilities.
Today, Jamisie is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the station, which includes customer service, submitting weather reports, and acting as the main point of contact for the four to six on-site employees. It’s a leadership role that comes with challenges, but also a strong sense of purpose.
“This job has helped me a lot,” he says. “I’m not afraid to work hard. I didn’t know I could do it, but I can.” Jamisie’s passion for aviation shines through when he speaks. He has loved airplanes since he was young and still remembers his first flight and the breathtaking view from above. “Working at Air Inuit is the best!”
While leadership can come with stressful moments, Jamisie reminds himself to stay calm and keep moving forward. For now, his focus is on continuing to work alongside his team and growing more confident in his role. What comes next? Only time will tell what opportunity will knock on his door.
Thank you, Jamisie, for your dedication and commitment to Air Inuit.
